The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, met with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), and Premier League clubs to discuss measures for improving safety at football matches. The meeting followed the tragic incident at the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC, where the death of Francis Nana Yaw Frimpong (Nana Poole) occurred. The focus of the meeting was on closing gaps in football policing and ensuring a safer environment for players, officials, and spectators.
Several key decisions emerged from the meeting. The Police will appoint Sports Security Officers across all 16 regions. These officers will act as the main link between the Police and the GFA. This decision aims to improve communication and safety at matches. Additionally, the Police will set up a Sports Policing Unit to focus on sports-related security. This unit will engage with supporter groups to build trust and enhance safety at matches.

Moreover, sports policing will become part of the training curriculum at Police Training Schools starting immediately. This measure ensures that all officers will be trained in managing security during sports events. The Police will also enhance their intelligence operations around teams to identify potential risks. In addition, they plan to launch a fan education program to promote a safer and more respectful fan culture. This program will honor the memory of Francis Nana Yaw Frimpong.
Dr. Akuffo-Dampare emphasized the Police’s commitment, saying, “We are committed to fixing the problem. It’s our responsibility to protect the people of Ghana and the fabric that brings us together.” The meeting concluded with a one-minute silence in honor of Nana Poole. Following this, the GFA will hold a follow-up meeting with Premier League clubs on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Dr. Akuffo-Dampare also reassured the family of Yaw Frimpong, Asante Kotoko SC, and the entire football community that the Police will pursue justice. These actions reflect a collective effort to ensure safety at football matches in Ghana.
