EOCO Rescues Over 200 in Human Trafficking Crackdown at Oyarifa

In a bold move to dismantle human trafficking networks, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested 35 people and rescued over 200 victims in Oyarifa, Accra. The victims, mostly foreigners, were tricked with false promises of jobs and a better life.

According to Acting EOCO Director Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, the suspects operated a structured trafficking ring. They lured individuals from across West Africa and forced them into cybercrime.

“We arrested 219 people in total. The traffickers promised the victims high-paying jobs. But after arriving, they were confined and forced into fraud-related activities,” he stated.

EOCO officers recovered laptops, internet routers, food supplies, and personal items used for online scams.

The agency has started screening the individuals to separate suspects from victims and identify minors. “This screening helps us know who the real victims are and what roles everyone played,” Mr. Dapilah added.

The Nigerian High Commission visited the EOCO facility. They spoke with the victims and suspects and encouraged cooperation. Plans are underway to repatriate the victims, especially those from Nigeria.

One victim shared his experience: “I came to Ghana hoping for a better future. Instead, I was locked up, fed once a day, and forced into fraud. I’ve waited for this day for a year.”

EOCO has launched similar operations in other regions. Mr. Dapilah emphasized their commitment: “This is just the beginning. We will keep working with the CID to shut down these trafficking groups.”

The screening process is expected to end within 24 hours.
