Health Minister Calls on TTH Staff to End Strike and Begin Negotiations

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has appealed to medical staff at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) to call off their strike and return to the negotiation table. He believes this will ensure continuity in patient care and restore stability in the healthcare system.

On Wednesday, April 23, the Minister visited the hospital without prior notice. Just hours later, he dismissed the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Atik Adam. The decision followed allegations of mismanagement and medical negligence linked to a patient’s death.

During a press briefing on April 24, Mr. Akandoh acknowledged the staff’s concerns. He assured them of his commitment to their welfare and urged collaboration. “I’m here to protect your interests. Let’s end the strike, regroup, and plan the way forward,” he said.

He also called for a new approach in managing resources. The Minister emphasized the need for sustainable procurement and proper maintenance of medical equipment.

“Relying only on government donations isn’t sustainable. We use internally generated funds for some things, yet when equipment becomes obsolete, we often return to government for support,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) criticized his handling of the issue. They have asked for an apology from the Minister.
