The Asante Kingdom mourns the passing of Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II. The Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty officially informed the Asantehene during a solemn ceremony at the Manhyia Palace, led by Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu II served as Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. He held the Silver Stool, one of the highest-ranking traditional positions under the Asantehene. His leadership role made him a key figure in safeguarding Asante customs.
Born on 31 December 1939, he passed away at the age of 86 after ruling for 26 years. Before ascending the Silver Stool, he was known as Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, a lawyer and economist. He also served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Throughout his reign, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II earned a reputation for diplomacy, loyalty, and dedication to tradition. He worked tirelessly to strengthen the Mampong community and Ghana’s broader chieftaincy system.
The formal announcement at Manhyia Palace reflected the deep customs of the Asante Kingdom. It honored the traditional protocol reserved for revered leaders.His last public appearance was during the Akwasidae festival at Mampong.
There, he publicly criticized some NDC supporters for fueling tribal divisions in their protest over the appointment of a new MCE for the Mampong Municipal Assembly.
Funeral details are expected to be shared soon. The Mampong Traditional Council will organize ceremonies to celebrate his life and contributions.
